In a significant move towards technological self-reliance, the Indian government is contemplating the mandatory integration of the homegrown navigation system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), across all devices. This initiative, which Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, is driving, highlights the country’s commitment to supporting domestic innovation.
NavIC: India’s Answer to Global Navigation Systems
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which developed NavIC, is a testament to India’s prowess in space technology. NavIC provides thorough coverage of India and its surrounding areas, including the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, thanks to a constellation of seven satellites. This robust system rivals global navigation stalwarts such as the US’s GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, the European Union’s Galileo, China’s BeiDou, and Japan’s QZSS.
The Roadmap to NavIC Integration
Chandrasekhar has outlined an ambitious timeline for the adoption of NavIC. By January 1, 2025, all 5G phones are expected to support NavIC, with other phones (L1 band) following suit by December 2025. This move aligns with global tech giants like Apple, which has already integrated NavIC into its latest iPhone 15 series, showcasing the system’s global appeal and reliability.
Boosting Indigenous Chip Manufacturing
Highlighting the strides made in indigenous chip design, Chandrasekhar spotlighted Accord, an Indian startup that has pioneered the design of NavIC chips. With over a million NavIC chips already manufactured, the potential for large-scale adoption is evident. The government’s vision extends beyond smartphones, with plans to mandate NavIC-powered trackers in the automotive industry, emphasizing the system’s versatility and wide-ranging applications.
Incentives for Homegrown Innovation
To further bolster the adoption of NavIC, the government is offering incentives under the IT Hardware PLI scheme. Manufacturers who use Indian-designed or Indian-made chips stand to gain, paving the way for a time when NavIC chips will power the majority of mobile devices. As Chandrasekhar aptly stated, “When we have a mobile phone grid chip that is performance-, cost-, and cost-competitive, we will certainly incentivize mobile phone devices to incorporate that as well.
Conclusion
The push for NavIC’s mandatory integration underscores India’s vision for a technologically self-reliant future. By championing homegrown innovations and offering incentives for their adoption, the nation is poised to carve a niche for itself in the global technological landscape.
